A constitutional amendment bill proposing new delimitations for Punjab and the creation of a new province called ‘Western Punjab’ has been presented in the National Assembly.
The 2025 amendment bill was introduced by MNA Riaz Hussain Fatyana. It suggests dividing Punjab to address administrative challenges posed by the province’s rapidly growing population and related issues. The proposed ‘Western Punjab’ would include Faisalabad and Sahiwal divisions, featuring the province’s second-largest forest, a major agricultural university, and significant industrial centers.
The bill proposes amendments to Articles 1, 51, 59, 106, 154, 175A, 198, and 218 of the Constitution, affecting the distribution of provincial and federal assembly seats. Under the new arrangement, Punjab would have 114 general seats and 24 women’s seats (138 total), Sindh 61 general and 14 women’s seats (75 total), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 45 general and 10 women’s seats (55 total), and Balochistan 16 general and 4 women’s seats (20 total).
The federal capital would retain 3 general seats with no women’s seats, making the National Assembly’s total 256 general and 60 women’s seats (316 total). The new province of Western Punjab would be allocated 27 general and 8 women’s seats.
If passed, Pakistan would have five provinces with Islamabad maintaining its separate status. The bill has been sent to the relevant standing committee by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.
