India has refused to accept the International Court of Arbitration’s decision in favor of Pakistan regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, declaring that the court has no jurisdiction over the matter.
The court had ruled that under the treaty, India is obligated to allow the uninterrupted flow of the western rivers’ waters to Pakistan. In its response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it has never recognized the authority of the International Court of Arbitration to adjudicate disputes under the treaty.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the court’s interpretation of the treaty was announced on August 8 but published on its website on Monday. The ruling states that India must release the waters of the western rivers for Pakistan’s unrestricted use and that any exceptions for hydropower projects must strictly adhere to the conditions outlined in the treaty.
The Foreign Office spokesperson emphasized that the court’s decisions are final and binding on both parties. The verdict reinforces Pakistan’s stance that India must comply fully with the terms of the Indus Waters Treaty.
