Shaheen Afridi Breaks ODI World Record as Pakistan Defeat West Indies in Series Opener

Pakistan’s star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi set a new world record in One Day International cricket during the first ODI against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Stadium.

Pakistan, after winning the toss, opted to bowl first and restricted the hosts to 280 runs in the allotted 50 overs. For the West Indies, Evin Lewis, captain Shai Hope, and Roston Chase all scored half-centuries. Shaheen Afridi shone with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 51 runs, while Naseem Shah claimed 3 wickets for 55 runs.

With his four-wicket haul, Shaheen reached 131 ODI wickets in just 65 matches — becoming the fastest bowler in history to achieve the feat. The previous record was held by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, who took 128 wickets in the same number of matches.

Chasing 281, Pakistan displayed solid batting and reached the target in 48.5 overs with five wickets in hand. Hasan Nawaz played a match-winning unbeaten knock of 63 runs, including a six and the decisive boundary, while captain Mohammad Rizwan contributed 53 runs.

With this victory, Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second ODI will be played on Sunday, followed by the third and final match on Tuesday, both at the Brian Lara Stadium.
