PM Shehbaz Chairs High-Level Meeting on Gwadar Water Shortage

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting to review the water crisis in Gwadar. Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti attended via video link and provided a detailed briefing on the city’s water issues, challenges, and ongoing measures to address them.

Chief Minister Bugti highlighted that power instability and the suspension of electricity supply from Iran were hindering the uninterrupted operation of the city’s desalination plant. He also noted that poor planning of the Khuzdar-Gwadar national grid line has caused voltage fluctuations, further complicating the situation.

Bugti said that a comprehensive strategy was being developed for the sustainable resolution of Gwadar’s water problems. He recommended a reassessment of the Khuzdar-Gwadar national grid line and the implementation of necessary improvements. Emergency measures, including the operation of the desalination plant through powerhouses and generators, are already underway, he added.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to ensure a long-term solution to both the water and electricity issues in Gwadar. He instructed the federal minister for power, the planning commission, and relevant secretaries to visit Gwadar on August 15.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that uninterrupted water supply to the residents of Gwadar must be guaranteed in consultation with the Balochistan Chief Minister.
