Federal Shariat Court declares attempted suicide a criminal offence

The Federal Shariat Court (FSC) has ruled that an attempt to commit suicide is a criminal offence and declared the government’s 2022 legislation decriminalizing attempted suicide as repugnant to Islamic injunctions.

The court allowed petitions challenging the 2022 amendment and struck down the relevant provisions of the law.

Under the 2022 legal changes, the provision that treated attempted suicide as an offence had been removed. In its judgment, the Federal Shariat Court restored the deleted section of the Pakistan Penal Code and the corresponding provision of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The reserved verdict was announced by a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman, Justice Muhammad Anwar Iqbal, and Justice Ameer Khan.

Advocate Hammad Hassan Dar and Advocate Azam Malik represented the petitioners in the case.
