GWADAR: The Balochistan government has decided to give greater priority to development needs in Gwadar, with a particular focus on urban rehabilitation, water supply, education and sports facilities.
The decision was discussed during a high-level review meeting of the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) chaired by Balochistan Planning and Development Minister Mir Zahoor Buledi.
Officials reviewed the progress of development schemes across the port city, including completed and ongoing projects, municipal services, water availability, future funding requirements and the performance of the GDA School.
The meeting was attended by MPAs Maulana Hidayatur Rehman, Syed Zafar Ali Agha and Engineer Abdul Majeed Badini, as well as GDA Director General Mujeebur Rehman Qambrani, Chief Engineer Haji Syed Muhammad and other officials.
Old Town rehabilitation project reviewed
The GDA gave the meeting an overview of its development activities, with particular attention to the Old Town Rehabilitation Project.
The project has been designed to improve Gwadar’s urban infrastructure while providing essential civic facilities and maintaining areas of historical and cultural significance.
According to the briefing, work under the initiative has included the construction, improvement and rehabilitation of roads, streets, markets, educational facilities, graveyards, Eidgahs and traffic intersections.
Officials said the improvements have contributed to better traffic movement, a more organised urban environment and increased activity in commercial areas.
More than 5,000 trees planted across Gwadar
The GDA informed participants that more than 5,000 trees had been planted in different parts of Gwadar as part of efforts to improve the city’s environment.
The authority is also responsible for maintaining a wide range of public infrastructure and municipal facilities.
Its responsibilities include approximately 31 kilometres of sewage drains, 23 kilometres of rainwater drainage channels and more than 250 kilometres of roads.
The GDA also oversees three sports stadiums, three public parks, the GDA School, GDA Hospital and Fish Landing Jetty.
Municipal teams continue to provide sanitation and maintenance services across city roads, beaches, public spaces and major avenues.
Water supply remains a key priority
Water availability was another major issue discussed during the meeting.
Officials presented an update on steps taken during the past year to improve Gwadar’s water supply and distribution network. The meeting also examined requirements for financing future development schemes aimed at addressing the city’s infrastructure needs.
The review comes as Gwadar continues to require investment in basic municipal infrastructure alongside broader urban development.
Officials also discussed administrative matters and ways to improve the performance of the GDA School.
The provincial government’s decision to prioritise water, urban rehabilitation, education and sports indicates a renewed focus on improving essential public services and living conditions in Gwadar.
