Is Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti’s Removal Imminent?

Balochistan’s political landscape is once again witnessing turbulence as speculation mounts over the possible removal of Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti. Statements from various political leaders have added to the uncertainty, intensifying the province’s political debate.

Senator Mir Dostain Domki, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), claimed that an agreement between PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on a two-and-a-half-year rotation for the chief ministership had already been reached, and it was now time for its implementation. He said that due to poor governance in the province, the decision to remove Sarfraz Bugti had been finalized, and PPP has already started consultations on the name of a new chief minister.

Domki criticized the current government for disappointing both party leadership and influential quarters, citing nepotism, corruption, and bad governance as factors adversely affecting law and order. He added that PPP’s internal decision to bring a new chief minister from within the party was final.

However, PPP central leader and Provincial Assembly member Ali Madad Jatak strongly rejected these claims. He said the current government was taking serious steps to ensure peace, development, and prosperity in Balochistan, and any talk of removing Sarfraz Bugti was merely a political fantasy. According to Jatak, both President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari have full confidence in the chief minister.

He further added that Bugti was actively working with allied parties to steer the province towards development, with support from Prime Minister and PML-N leadership. Jatak described the rumors of a change as political point-scoring, noting that the government was simultaneously targeting anti-peace elements and advancing development projects.

On the other hand, PPP MPA and Parliamentary Secretary Liaqat Lahri presented a contrasting view, stating that most party members supported a change in the chief ministership. He emphasized that a new, proactive leader familiar with the province’s issues was necessary to address Balochistan’s challenges. Lahri added that party members had conveyed the ground realities to the leadership, and they would accept the central leadership’s decision, which would prioritize the province’s welfare.

These conflicting statements have escalated the political temperature in Balochistan. While some leaders push for change, others affirm full confidence in the current chief minister. The coming days could prove pivotal in shaping the province’s political future.
