Quetta Air Pollution Reaches Very Unhealthy Levels

Quetta is experiencing a severe air pollution episode as the Air Quality Index (AQI⁺) has soared to 263, placing it in the “very unhealthy” category. The spike in pollution is largely due to elevated levels of PM2.5, fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.

High PM2.5 concentrations pose serious health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Prolonged exposure can lead to coughing, shortness of breath, aggravated asthma, and other chronic health problems.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities and avoid strenuous physical exertion. Wearing protective masks, using air purifiers indoors, and keeping windows closed can help reduce exposure to harmful particles.

Environmental experts warn that poor air quality in Quetta is becoming a recurring concern, exacerbated by factors such as vehicle emissions, industrial activity, and seasonal weather conditions that trap pollutants in the city. Authorities are urged to monitor air quality closely and consider long-term measures to reduce pollution, including stricter emissions controls and public awareness campaigns.

As the situation persists, public health officials emphasize the need for preventive action to protect vulnerable populations from the adverse effects of highly polluted air.
