89 coal miners killed in accidents across Balochistan during 2025

Quetta: At least 89 coal miners were killed in accidents at coal mines across Balochistan during the year 2025, according to data released by the Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation.

The federation stated that fatal incidents occurred throughout the year, highlighting serious safety concerns in the province’s mining sector. During the month of December alone, seven separate mine accidents were reported, resulting in the deaths of eight miners.

According to the statistics, the rate of mine-related fatalities in Balochistan remains significantly higher than in other provinces. During the same period, 41 miner deaths were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 14 in Punjab, and six in Sindh.

The federation further revealed that 618 coal miners have lost their lives in Balochistan over the past eight years, underlining a persistent lack of effective safety measures in the mining industry.

Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation leader Sultan Muhammad Khan said that coal miners face life-threatening risks including suffocation, poisonous gases, roof collapses, explosions, and severe lung diseases. He stressed that the protection of miners’ lives is a fundamental right and demanded urgent steps to ensure workplace safety, proper monitoring, and enforcement of labor laws.
