Pakistan Railways has decided to upgrade the 600-kilometre rail track from Nokundi to Sibi to meet the growing transport needs of the Reko Diq project. Officials say the upgrade will boost cargo movement and strengthen regional connectivity.
Divisional Superintendent Railways Imran Hayat Khan confirmed the decision. He said the project holds major economic importance due to the scale of mining activities planned in Reko Diq. The upgraded track will support heavy freight trains and ensure a faster supply chain for minerals and equipment.
According to the Railways Department, the new rail line will be imported from abroad. Officials say the imported material will ensure durability and meet international safety standards. The upgrade will replace old sections of track and improve speed limits across the route.
The project will begin in February next year. Railways teams and contractors are preparing the technical plan. The department says the work will be carried out in multiple phases to avoid major disruptions in routine train operations.
The total cost of the track upgrade is estimated at 360 million dollars. Funding has been allocated, and authorities expect the investment to support long-term economic gains through improved transport capacity.
Pakistan Railways has set a completion target of three years. Once finished, the upgraded Nokundi–Sibi corridor will become a major freight route for the Reko Diq project. Officials believe it will also serve local industries, reduce travel time, and open new economic opportunities in remote districts.
The Railways Department plans to coordinate with provincial authorities throughout the project. Engineers say the upgraded track will allow high-capacity freight trains to operate more safely and efficiently.
The government hopes the project will strengthen the mining supply chain, create jobs, and enhance the overall infrastructure network in Balochistan.
