Sub-zero cold freezes water pipes in Chaman

Chaman and other parts of northern Balochistan continue to experience extreme cold conditions following recent snowfall, as icy winds sweep across the region and temperatures plunge several degrees below the freezing point, severely disrupting daily life.

According to official data, the ongoing cold wave has intensified across northern districts of Balochistan. Temperatures dropped to minus 6°C in Chaman, minus 9°C at Khojak Top, minus 10°C in Khwaja Imran, minus 11°C in Kalat, minus 5°C in Qila Saifullah, minus 6°C in Qila Abdullah, and minus 12°C in Toba Achakzai. In Quetta, the provincial capital, the mercury fell to 1°C, making it one of the coldest nights of the season.

In Chaman, the severe cold caused water to freeze inside household pipelines, disrupting the water supply in several neighborhoods. Residents reported significant difficulties in accessing water for daily use as frozen pipes blocked the flow, particularly during early morning and late-night hours. The situation added to the hardships already faced by citizens amid prolonged power outages and freezing temperatures.

Snowfall and sub-zero temperatures also affected road connectivity in parts of northern Balochistan. However, the National Highway Authority (NHA), in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the district administration, removed accumulated snow from the Quetta–Chaman Highway (N-25). Following clearance operations, traffic flow was restored, providing relief to commuters and transporters after temporary suspensions.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that the cold spell is likely to intensify further. According to the department, temperatures may drop further tonight and tomorrow morning in Chaman and other northern areas of Balochistan. The PMD also confirmed that a strong westerly weather system is expected to enter the region, which may prolong the cold conditions and increase the chances of frost in high-altitude areas.

Authorities have advised residents, especially those living in cold-prone and mountainous regions, to take precautionary measures. Citizens have been urged to protect water pipelines, avoid unnecessary travel during extreme weather, and ensure adequate heating arrangements to prevent health risks related to severe cold.

The ongoing cold wave highlights the recurring winter challenges faced by northern Balochistan, where extreme temperatures often disrupt essential services and daily life.
