Islamabad: The Election Commission AJK has decided to announce the 2026 election schedule in May following consultations with major political parties. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner AJK Justice (R) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal.
According to the ECP, the elections will be held on time, with the Pakistan Army ensuring security across the country. The meeting reviewed detailed proposals aimed at making the electoral process transparent, fair, and impartial.
Officials confirmed that digital linkage between NADRA’s database and electoral rolls has been completed. With the new system, citizens who turn 18 will be automatically added to the voter lists, while updates to national identity cards will be reflected automatically in the Election Commission’s records.
The ECP directed political parties to actively share commission guidelines on social media. The forum also discussed special arrangements for refugee voters from Jammu and Kashmir, the activation of NADRA mobile vans, and accelerating the public registration process.
Political parties proposed that voter lists be organized at the ward level and expressed concern over a decline in registered voters in certain union councils. They also presented proposals to strengthen security arrangements and improve the effectiveness of the electoral code of conduct.
The meeting further reviewed measures to ensure accuracy in voter lists for 12 refugee constituencies, including the deployment of military personnel and the use of manual verification methods to enhance transparency.
Justice (R) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal emphasized that the sanctity of the vote would be protected at all costs. He said the ECP had completed its working plan 120 days ahead of the elections, as required by law. All registered and unregistered political parties were invited to the consultation process.
The Election Commission clarified that matters related to “state subject” status do not fall under its jurisdiction.
At the conclusion of the meeting, all political parties assured full cooperation for holding timely and transparent elections. The Chief Election Commissioner urged parties to fulfill their electoral responsibilities without delay.
