Quetta: The Balochistan High Court has summoned the Interior Secretary and the Director General of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to appear in person on August 15, along with complete details regarding the suspension of internet services in the province.
The order was issued by a two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Rozi Khan Bareech and Justice Sardar Haleem Ahmed Haleemi during the hearing of a petition filed by the Consumer Civil Society.
During the proceedings, the court expressed concern over the continued disruption of internet services and sought a comprehensive explanation from the authorities on the legal basis, necessity, and duration of such measures.
Background:
Internet services in parts of Balochistan have faced repeated suspensions in recent months, often cited by the government as security measures during sensitive events. However, rights groups and civil society activists argue that prolonged internet shutdowns adversely affect education, businesses, and access to information, calling them a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights.
