Heavy rains and flash floods kill two, leave child missing in Balochistan

Heavy rains and flash floods in Balochistan have once again highlighted the province’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Torrential downpours battered several districts, leaving behind loss of life, widespread damage to homes, and disruption of vital infrastructure.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), at least two people — a woman and a child — lost their lives in Harnai district after the roof of their house collapsed. In Gochina, Harnai, three individuals were swept away by powerful floodwaters. Rescuers managed to pull two of them to safety, but a child remains missing as search and rescue operations continue.

In Surab district, more than 115 houses sustained partial damage, with several neighborhoods reported to be badly hit. The PDMA further confirmed that one house in Harnai was completely destroyed, leaving the affected families displaced. Relief efforts are underway, but local authorities have warned that continued rainfall may worsen the situation.

The floods also damaged crucial road networks. The Quetta–Sibi National Highway (N-65), an essential transport link between Quetta and Karachi, was closed to traffic after the Bib Nani Bridge was severely impacted by rising water levels in the Bolan River. This closure has caused significant disruptions to passenger and cargo movement.

Experts warn that climate change and poor infrastructure planning are increasing the frequency and impact of floods in Balochistan. The province, already facing water scarcity and fragile infrastructure, struggles to cope with extreme events. Environmentalists have urged authorities to strengthen flood management systems, build resilient housing, and rehabilitate bridges and roads to prevent repeated disasters.
