Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting in Tianjin ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. The summit is scheduled for August 31 and September 1 in Tianjin, with participation from more than 20 global leaders.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit marks his first trip to China in seven years. Relations between India and China had remained tense since the 2020 border clashes, but last year’s meeting in Kazan raised hopes of improved ties.
The SCO Summit will also be attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and other key leaders from member states. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to meet President Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Qiang to discuss various aspects of bilateral cooperation.
The SCO brings together China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus as full members, while 16 other countries are participating as observers or dialogue partners.
